For more than six decades—from the time he left the École des beaux-arts in Montreal at the beginning of the 1930s until his late career at the end of the 1980s—Jean Paul Lemieux practised painting that reflected a highly personal vision of Quebec, in landscape, portraits, narrative, and religious scenes. Bruce Smith was a generous donor to the Government of Ontario Art Collection and we sadly acknowledge his death in December of 2005. In 2002 and 2005 Smith donated a total of twelve of his own paintings and one of Albert Chiarandini’s, of whom he was once a pupil.
